Thousands of years ago, Earth was colonised by a race known as gems. The planet was ripe for use, and the gems used it, injecting gem seeds into the planet's crust where they would use the world's vitality to grow and develop into fully-grown gems. The process would leave nothing behind, making the Earth little more than a lifeless husk. It had been done to other worlds, and the Diamond Authority had no problem doing it to this one.
But one gem protested. Her name was Rose Quartz, and she was a strong, powerful, and compassionate leader, gathering gems to her cause. Earth, she saw, was too precious and too full of amazing and beautiful forms of life for the gems to simply harvest it and move on, and thus she started a civil war. Gem fought gem, each side fully believing they were doing what was right.
One of the gems on Rose's side was Garnet: an abomination in the eyes of the Gem race. She was a fusion of a Ruby soldier with a rare and highly-ranked Sapphire, held together with a love so deep that the two gems refused to be separated. Garnet dedicated herself to Rose and her beliefs that the humans, their planet, and the freedom to love should be defended.
Rose's army won the war, but at great cost. Only Rose, Garnet, Pearl, and a young Amethyst created on Earth were left. When Rose gave up her physical form to give life to her son, Steven, that left Garnet as the Crystal Gems' leader, a post she's held with her even personality, her sheer physical strength, and an undercurrent of humour that few people ever expect. The combination of Ruby and Sapphire gives her both something of a temper (violence is easy for her) and thoughtfulness (she might be blunt, but she means well). Add in her future vision, and Garnet makes either a powerful ally or formidable enemy.
